We were asked to create a film to show at British Columbia’s largest fundraising gala to help share the story of what IJM is doing in Northern Thailand. They wanted to improve the visual storytelling at the event to improve the gala experience from years past.
We pitched the idea of telling the story around Murray Neilson, a longtime supporter of IJM and MC of the Gala, as he embarked on a learning tour to Northern Thailand. We wanted to audience to join Murray as he learned first hand, on the ground, the important work that IJM is doing.
The added emotional arc of the film is how Murray talks about his own grandkids and how he cannot imagine them being subject to some of the things he was hearing about. We did this intentionally to bring it close to home.
The production of this film was done in two phases.
Phase 1 included an interview with Murray in Vancouver and b-roll filming with his grandkids at a park.
Phase 2 was in Thailand. We sent Sam to Thailand for a whirlwind 3 days to capture the journey that Murray was on.
The film was premiered at the Vancouver Benefit Gala in 2016 to tremendous reviews from those who attended. The fundraiser exceeded their Stretch Goal. Boom.
“The Team at Cassiar are a wonderful group to work with. Cassiar’s ability to craft a beautiful story of justice through the brokenness of a people striving for identity, was powerfully moving. I cannot recommend Cassiar enough. They are professional, compassionate and poetic storytellers.”
